Shisham (Dalbergia sissoo) - also known as Indian Rosewood - is a semi-temperate, sustainable hardwood of the teak family and the most important cultivated timber tree in India. The Shisham Tree is plentiful in India and is planted often on roadsides, and as a shade tree for tea plantations. It is also used for plywood, agriculture, musical instruments, skis, carvings, boats, floorings and now has been made into this beautiful and luxurious prop for Yoga Practice.
The Shisham tree is prized for its naturally dark heartwood and contrasting layers of lighter new growth. It is a fast-growing species that can reach 100 ft tall. It seasons well and does not warp or split. It is also extremely durable and improves soil fertility.
Not only beautiful to look at and touch, the oil obtained from the seeds of this tree and the powdered wood applied externally as a paste is reportedly used to cure skin diseases. Ayurvedics prescribe the leaf juice of Shisham trees for eye ailments and skin ailments and the wood and bark for helping to cure blood diseases and stomach problems.
Shisham Trees are indigenous to India, Nepal, and Pakistan and are referred to in Ancient texts from Mesopotamia.
(There are inherent irregularities in each wood block that renders them unique. The natural wood grain and color will also vary from block to block.)
